Great skin is not simply a matter of DNA — your daily habits, in fact, have a big impact on what you see in the mirror. But depending on which product reviews you read or doctors you consult, there is a dizzying number of opinions on everything from how to moisturize to how to protect yourself from UV rays. Ultimately, caring for your skin is simply personal. Here’s what you should keep in mind to sort through all the noise.
'Skin care' is the range of practices that support skin integrity, enhance its appearance and relieve skin conditions. They can include nutrition, avoidance of excessive sun exposure and appropriate use of emollients. Practices that enhance appearance include the use of cosmetics, botulinum, exfoliation, fillers, laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, peels, retinol therapy. Skin care is a routine daily procedure in many settings, such as skin that is either too dry or too moist, and prevention of dermatitis and prevention of skin injuries.Skin care is a part of the treatment of wound healing, radiation therapy and some medications.
How to Wash Your Face Like a Pro
Did you know there's a best way to wash your face? Here's how skin-care specialist Kristina Holey does it.
1.Rinse your face with warm water to moisten the skin. If you’re using an oil, shake your bottle, apply one pump into your palms and rub hands together. The liquid will start to emulsify.
2. Massage the cleanser into your skin and slowly add more warm water to create a lather. (Insider Tip: add tiny handfuls of water from the faucet, keeping your face low in the basin.) I like to use the first three fingers of each hand and work them together, in symmetry. Think about massaging the muscles under the skin rather than the skin — you don't want to be so gentle you can't really feel anything, but you don't want to pull on the skin either. It may take a few times to really figure out the right pressure and rhythm.
3. Work the cleanser all over the face; begin with the nose and cheekbones, moving outward. Try rubbing back and forth over the bridge of the nose, and down and around the nostrils. Then draw circles around the eyes, work up and outward on the forehead, around the ears, down the sides of your face, jawline/chin, and do small circles up the neck. I like to apply a little pressure and work the circles on my lymph nodes under my jaw and top of neck for a while (about two minutes).
4. Rinse your hands in running water and follow the same pattern with water, slowly removing the cleanser; this can be repeated multiple times.
5. If you’re wearing heavy makeup, soak a warm muslin cloth in water and gently swipe across face, removing any residue and drying the skin. Or some people opt to just rinse off their oil cleansers with water.
6. After the face is thoroughly cleansed and rinsed, pat dry with a soft towel. You can also moisten a cotton pad with a hydrating facial mist and swipe across face as a quick alternative to the double cleansing technique.”
Skin Care Tips Before You Start
Three Main Steps
Think of your skin-care routine as consisting of three main steps:
Cleansing — Washing your face.
Toning — Balancing the skin.
Moisturizing — Hydrating and softening the skin.
Building a daily skin care routine
No matter what your skin type is, a daily skin care routine can help you maintain overall skin health and improve specific concerns like acne, scarring, and dark spots. A daily skin care routine has four basic steps you can do once in the morning and once before you sleep.
1. Cleansing: Choose a cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin tight after washing. Clean your face no more than twice a day, or just once, if you have dry skin and don’t wear makeup. Avoid washing for that squeaky-clean feeling because that means your skin’s natural oils are gone. Cleansers known to work well for all skin types include Cetaphil and Banila Clean It Zero Sherbet Cleanser.
2. Serums: A serum with vitamin C or growth factors or peptides would be better in the morning, under sunscreen. At night, retinol or prescription retinoids work best. Makeup Artist’s Choice has an effective vitamin C and E serum and retinol available.
3. Moisturizer: Even oily skin needs moisturizer, but use one that is lightweight, gel-based, and non-comedogenic, or doesn’t block your pores, like CeraVe’s facial lotion. Dry skin may benefit from more cream-based moisturizers like MISSHA Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream. Most brands will label their products as gel or cream on their packaging.
4. Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF 15 minutes before heading outdoors, as it takes a while for sunscreen to activate. Darker skin tones actually need more sun protection because hyperpigmentation is harder to correct. Try EltaMD’s sunscreen, which offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
The goal of any skin-care routine is to tune up your complexion so it’s functioning at its best, and also troubleshoot or target any areas you want to work on. “Beauty routines are an opportunity to notice changes within yourself,” says the San Francisco skin-care specialist Kristina Holey. As your skin needs shifts with age, so will your products. Still, she adds, “it’s not about creating perfection.” Allow these three steps to become your daily ritual that fortifies your skin and grounds your day.
Give it Time
The science behind skin-care products has come a long way but there’s still no such thing as an instant fix — you need time to reap the benefits, says Dr. Rachel Nazarian, a Manhattan dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group. “Results are only seen through consistent use,” she explains. Generally, aim to use a product over at least six weeks, once or twice daily, to notice a difference.
Tip: With any skin-care product, apply in order of consistency — from thinnest to thickest. For example, cleanser, toner (if you use it), serum, and then moisturizer.
Washing your face is the most basic and essential step of any routine, says the New York City dermatologist Dr. Carlos Charles. “Our skin comes in contact with environmental pollutants, dirt and other factors each day that should be gently removed.” Wash twice a day, morning and night, to avoid clogged pores, dullness and acne.
Find Your Facial Cleanser
The right formula cleanses your skin without stripping essential, healthy oils. Take it easy with exfoliating scrubs (use once a week) and avoid those with crushed walnut shells or abrasive ingredients.
For everyday cleansing, here’s what to look for:
What Does Non-Comedogenic Mean Exactly?
This term frequently appears on product labels and is used by skin-care experts but not always defined in simple, clear language. Here’s a quick explanation: If a product claims to be non-comedogenic it means that it shouldn’t clog pores or trigger acne — either by occluding the skin, blocking glands or irritating the hair follicle. The claim is not regulated by the F.D.A., however, and many companies do their own internal tests to determine whether a product should be considered comedogenic or not. (Some common known comedogenic ingredients are coconut oil and cocoa butter.) Typically, the fewer ingredients a product has, the easier it is to determine if it will cause any reactions.
Skin care is like planting plants in the soil, soil moisture, fertilizer moisture, plants are naturally green.
l Mask 2-3 times a week. For ordinary people, this frequency is enough to replenish the nutrients of the skin and give it time to absorb and digest slowly.
l The importance of massage and emulsification. Massage is to make nutrients penetrate into the base, so that the skin absorbs enough moisture and nutrients, otherwise the cream and mask will be used for nothing. The cream emulsification helps the skin absorb nutrients quickly. When the skin absorbs nutrients into the skin to achieve a water-oil balance, the skin will not become oily or dry. The massage/emulsification is not thorough, and the skin care products are just rubbed on the surface of the skin.
l Good skin care products should be used for a short period of time or stay up late during travel. Long-term use of the skin will cause acne and instability because of excessive nutrition. Just like plants cannot be fattened every day. Add some nutrients to absorb, and then add fertilizer after a while
l Always use basic skin care products, there will be lack of nutrients, lack of skin moisture or lack of collagen
l Basic moisturizing skin care is used in conjunction with advanced nutritional skin care, together with massage and emulsification to help the skin absorb.
l Cheap big bowl of skin care national brand + suitable for your own high-end brand skin care products, use together.
